Nadace Helmuta Newtona nedávno získala ze sbírky Françoise Pinaulta téměř 250 děl, která byla součástí legendárního archivu Condé Nast. Jsou mezi nimi portréty, fotografie módy, zátiší, architektury, žurnalistické snímky i rané ilustrace pro časopisy vydávané nakladatelstvím Condé Nast od roku 1910 do konce 70. let 20. století.

Součástí této pozoruhodné sbírky jsou přirozeně i díla Helmuta Newtona, který významně přispíval do časopisů Condé Nast zejména do Vogue a Vanity Fair již od roku 1950.

Výstava zároveň ukáže práce významných současníků Helmuta Newtona i jeho předchůdců jako Diane Arbus, Cecil Beaton, David Bailey, John Deakin, Robert Frank, Evelyn Hofer, Horst P. Horst, George Hoyningen-Huene, Peter Hujar, William Klein, Lisette Model, Ugo Mulas, Irving Penn, Bert Stern, Deborah Turbeville nebo Chris von Wangenheim.

CHRONORAMA přinese soubor vzácných historických tisků, z nichž mnohé tvořily základ vysoce kvalitních obrazových částí časopisů své doby. Tyto fotografické poklady přenesou dnešního diváka do 20. století a nabídnou mu pohled do tehdejší interpretace módních trendů, kultury, životního stylu i světového dění. Výstava je uspořádána po dekádách a začíná v roce 1910, tj. rok potom, co americký žurnalista a nakladatel Conde Nast získal časopis Vogue a vytvořil z něj přední platformu pro módu, styl a krásu. Na začátku byly fotografie ještě poměrně vzácné, takže v časopisech převažovaly kresby v té době renomovaných módních ilustrátorů. Na rozdíl od fotografie, byly ilustrace a obálky časopisů tehdy barevné. Postupně se však více prosadila fotografie, která z černobílé přešla na barvu. Nejstarší vystavený barevný snímek pochází z roku 1952 a pořídil jej Irving Penn, který je autorem více než stovky titulů časopisů Vogue.

Kromě módy ukáže CHRONORAMA i dobové portréty osobností z oblasti hudby, umění, sportu a politiky, honosné interiéry, kosmetické salony, umělecká zátiší a také některé novinářské fotografie, zachycující například válkou zničený Londýn nebo nově postavený Empire State Building v New Yorku. 

Výstavu CHRONORAMA – fotografické poklady 20. století, která v Berlíně začne 15. února, bude možné navštívit až do 20. května 2024.

Summary

From the partnership of the Helmut Newton Foundation and the famous modern art Pinault Collection, comes a show of works by the most famous photographers of the 20th century. After a successful premiere at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice, the joint project, CHRONORAMA – Photographic Treasures of the 20th Century will start at the Berlin Museum of Photography (Museum für Fotografie) on February 15, 2024. 

The Helmut Newton Foundation recently acquired a remarkable set of items from the collection of François Pinault as a part of the legendary Condé Nast archives. These include portraits, photographs of fashion, still lifes, architecture, journalistic images, and early illustrations for magazines published by Condé Nast from1910 till the end of the 1970s. This remarkable collection, of course, also includes photos by Helmut Newton who contributed to Condé Nast magazines such as Vogue and Vanity Fair since the 1950s. The exhibition will also show works by his important contemporaries as well as predecessors, e.g. Diane Arbus, Cecil Beaton, David Bailey, Horst P. Horst, Irving Penn, Bert Stern, Deborah Turbeville and many other.
The exhibition CHRONORAMA –can be visited in Berlin till May 20, 2024.
